Oaklyn Public Library
The program for this branch
library called for it to operate efficiently on one level with no elevators
or stairs. This proved to be a challenge on a site that drops 50 feet
from the highway. The solution was to build into the site and allow the
building to become a part of the site by using the roof as part of the
natural meadow landscape.
This garden roof protects the premium roof system from ultraviolet light and
weather extremes, makes the building extremely energy efficient, reduces
storm runoff on site and produces oxygen instead of adding to the urban
heat island effect.
This 18,500 foot library features
tall windows and a central clerstory to maximize daylight, a cafe’, reading area with fireplace,
a children’s area with computerized kinetic lighting and state of the
art technology.
